dance/headshots: ryan kirby.

Ryan is a high school junior that has a really unique opportunity in front of him.  In a little over a year when he graduates, he’ll be moving to LA to become a full-time dancer.  He’s been dancing at UCDC, a local dance studio, for several years now and has attracted the attention of dance agent Jim Keith in LA with DDO Artists Agency.  Jim is putting together a new comp card for Ryan so he needed to update his portfolio.  I loved this shoot and how everything turned out.  Ryan has an awesome future ahead of him in whatever he does – but he can definitely dance!

couples: hannah & jason.

So, blogging.  Yeah, I haven’t done this in, oh you know, TOO LONG.  Sorry about that…BUT the hiatus is over and I’ve got several good things in line to post over the next several days.  The first of which is the couples shoot I did recently with Hannah and Jason.  I’ve been friends with Hannah for a while now and she was actually one of the first girls I’d ever photographed when I started into photography.  As in, I borrowed someone else’s camera for a few days and she happened to be one of the unfortunate subjects in front of my lens.  Sorry about that Hannah, hopefully these have turned out better than those did a couple of years ago!  Since then, they’ve been pursuing some really cool things.  Hannah is an awesome masseuse over at Urban Nirvana in The Shops at Greenridge in Greenville so next time you need a massage, give them a call and ask for her – you won’t be disappointed!  Jason, on the other hand, is a baseball star.  He was drafted straight out of high school to play for the Boston Red Sox and is now playing for their AA team, the Portland Sea Dogs in Portland, Maine.  His off-season just finished up so before it did, and he had to head back up to Maine to start the next season, they wanted to have some updated photos taken.  This is such a great idea because you don’t have to be engaged to have a couples shoot – why not just do one for fun?  We shot these during one of our snowy/icy/slushy weekends on quite possibly the coldest day yet inside and out, but you’d never know it by their faces and I commend their bravery (’cause I was FREEZING!).  Enjoy – I did!

engagement: emily & cam.

Meet Emily and Cam.  Emily has been a friend for a few years now but I got to meet Cam back in December during our meeting at Chipotle (you can’t have a bad first meeting over a Chipotle burrito, right?).  Cam is a great guy and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know him too.  They’re both relaxed country-folk in the best of ways so it was only natural to shoot their engagement session at/around Emily’s property out in Blythewood, SC.  Old barns, horses, and pastures were perfect.  And for the middle of January, the weather couldn’t have worked out better – high in the mid-60’s, clear skies, and warm sunshine (i.e. NOT typical).  I’ll be shooting their wedding in June at Pretty Place and I can’t wait!

newspring’s 10th anniversary.

Unbelievable.  I’m not even sure I can say that these images do justice to what we experienced this past Sunday at Newspring’s 10th anniversary service.  So, our church decided that for our 10th anniversary we would just have church – only at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville with all 4 campuses together – and COMPLETELY pack it out (15,000 people!).  It was one church, having one service, to worship one God.  And He blew our minds.  Even the rainy, dreary weather didn’t hold people back from filling the place up and 350-400 people giving their lives to Christ!  I can’t say that I was a member of Newspring back when it first started 10 years ago in a living room, but I can say that it’s been my church for 6 years, since my freshman year of college at Clemson, when we were still meeting in the fine arts center at Anderson University.  I had no idea (along with everybody else) that just a few short years later we’d fill every seat at the Bi-Lo Center this past Sunday.  God has continually rocked our worlds with what He’s allowed us to be part of thus far as a church and we can’t wait to see where He takes us next.  I was so privileged to have had the opportunity to capture what happened (thanks Ken, Amanda, Ben, Brad, Will, and Adam for continuing to ask me to do this – I’m so blessed through all of you).  THE BEST IS YET TO COME.

March 8, 2010 - 8:59 am Dexter F. Stowers - This was a totally mind blowing experience for me at the BI-LO Center. God is always present in New Spring services, but this occasion was indescribable. My heart and soul was so full at this service. I was so exhausted that it took me three days to recover from such a spiritual high! God is so good to me and I know that I do not deserve any of this but I am thankful to Jesus Christ for His ultimate sacrifice that gives me the opportunity to bask in His glory and love! I am always trying to stretch myself higher and to move forward to Him always. To Jesus Christ be the glory forever!

wedding: casey & chris – anderson, sc.

Casey and her family have been friends with my fiancée’s family for a long time, so naturally I’ve gotten to be good friends with them over the past few years too.  Soon after I got to know Casey, I also had the privilege of getting to know Chris as well.  It’s almost even tradition that they come over on big Clemson football game nights to watch the game with all of us (well, Chris was usually watching from a different perspective – he was a trainer for the team so his view was from the sidelines!).  So when they asked me to capture their wedding, I was thrilled.  I always love when a friend asks me to shoot for them because I feel like it’s usually harder to impress your friends.  They know you and know what you do which tends to lessen the “impressable” factor a little bit whether it’s photography, sports, performing on stage as an actor or musician, etc, etc.  I posted Casey’s bridal session a little over a week ago so if you missed it, you can check it out here.

Casey started off the day with an awesome bridal brunch at The Victoria Tea Room in downtown Anderson.  Their basement is perfect for a casual meal with a little ambience from the white Christmas lights.

hopkins-blog-cip-1

The rest of the day was spent at Boulevard Baptist to get ready and for the ceremony that evening.

hopkins-blog-cip-4

Red is awesome for a winter wedding.  It really pops during the cold months.

hopkins-blog-cip-6

You might remember seeing Casey’s dress from her bridal session post.  The dress had a simple elegance and she really looked beautiful in it.  She also had her grandmother’s garter as a second garter for her “something blue”.

hopkins-blog-cip-26

Casey, Chris, and the rest of the bridal party were pretty brave (or crazy) to let me bring them outside for a little while since the high for the day was a soaring 36 degrees.

casey’s bridal.

<insert broken record player>…I love bridal shoots but it’s frustrating to not be able to show them to anyone until after the wedding!  Casey’s shoot was no exception.  We shot these back at the end of October and I loved what we were able to achieve with her shots.  Her dress is elegantly simple but so beautiful and she really glows in it.  Thanks to Cristin May for helping me out with some location access – I really appreciate it!  Casey & Chris’s wedding was this past Saturday and I can’t wait to get those photos up here soon.

jordan’s bridal session.

As promised in yesterday’s post of Jordan & Michael’s wedding, I can finally post Jordan’s bridal session.  I know some photographers don’t like shooting bridal sessions but I really do.  I think they’re a great way to get some awesome shots in your wedding dress minus the hectic-ness of the wedding day.  The only downside for me is that I have to wait until after the wedding to post the shots!  But – their wedding was last week so here we go…

We shot at Jordan’s cousins’ house – <ahem..mansion> – out on the edge of Sumter.  The several acres of property was gorgeous all the way around.  The house was set back from the road several hundred yards with an open grove of backlit trees in between.

jk-retouch-27

Next, we rode around towards the backside of the property to their barn and horse pasture.

She definitely had her share of awesome shoe choices to go with her wedding dress.

Right as the light started to fade out, we headed back to the house to finish up.

Jordan, you are beautiful and I loved spending the day back in November shooting with you.  Thanks for braving the cooling temperatures at the end of the day!

December 27, 2009 – Sumter, SC…

I was so privileged to capture Jordan & Michael’s wedding in Sumter last week.  Michael has been a good friend of mine since college and I finally got to meet Jordan when I shot their engagement session back in July…

…so when they asked me to capture their wedding, I was beyond excited – kind of like a late Christmas present for me!  They really are an amazing couple.  Their ceremony was held at First Presbyterian in Sumter…

chestnut-blog-cip-13

I got to see Jordan’s dress about a month and a half ago when we shot her bridal session so I couldn’t wait to shoot her in it again.  That session is coming to the blog soon.  So hard not to post bridal sessions ahead of the wedding!

Their reception was held at the amazing O’Donnell House just a few blocks from the church.  It’s an old historic house in downtown Sumter and was just renovated.  They finished just in time for Michael & Jordan to host their reception.
